Tuesday, March 31, 2020 Learning Activities

Hi Families,

Our Zoom Morning Meeting went so well yesterday that we are going to continue having them on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 9 am! This could change as we learn more about how the coming weeks will be structured.

Tuesday, March 31st, 2020. 3-31-20

It's the last day of March. Tomorrow starts a new month- April. April is the 4th month. What will the date look like tomorrow?

Tuesday's Learning Activities

  • Reading - Read for 20 minutes.
    • Practice retelling the book. If the book was fiction you can think about the fiction elements: character, setting, problem, and solution. If the book was nonfiction, tell what the book was mostly about (be specific) and then give lots of examples. Don't forget to add your own thoughts and ideas!
  • Writing - Re-read your book. Check each word to make sure you wrote letters for each sound. Check the word wall. Write for 20 minutes.
    • We are not looking for every word to be spelled perfectly. We want to see first graders write letters for all of the sounds that they hear and spelling patterns they know. Most first graders have learned digraph sounds (th, sh, ch, wh, ck), blends, and some long vowel patterns like magic e and maybe vowel teams. Students can also use the word wall words they know to spell other words. If you know how to spell "car" you can apply the "ar" to other words like sharpen.
  • Math - Continue to keep your counting skills strong by filling in the missing numbers on this “Counting Grid” practice page.
    • Extension activity: practice number before and number after, or ten less and ten more. Ask (or write down) a number. Have your child fill in the number that is one less, one more, ten less, and ten more than that number.
  • Science - Put a rubberband around a door knob. Pull the rubber band down a bit so it is stretched. Pluck the rubberband like a guitar. What do you notice? Try pulling the rubber band a bit more or a bit less. How does the sound change? Or complete the Mystery Science Lesson 4 Can you see in the dark?
  • Social Studies - Tell someone how spring is different from winter.  Each day, notice the weather and fill it in on the weather graph.

We are starting week 2 of distance learning. This week we are continuing our "maintenance of learning" phase. These activities should be review or ongoing practice of things we already learned this year.

Week Two Goals

In reading this week we are working on comprehension. Comprehension is talking about the books your read and sharing your ideas.

In writing, we are working on revising and editing our realistic fiction books. You will want to use the revising and editing checklists every day. You might also add more to your book or even start a new realistic fiction book in your series!

In math you will continue to practice important math skills.

In science we are continuing to study light and sound waves. You might be continuing the online Mystery Science lessons or putting together some sound experiments and making observations.

In social studies we are continuing to track the weather as we transition into Spring! A new month starts this week, it will be April. Do you know what they say about April? April showers bring May flowers!

Monday's learning activities

  • Reading - Read for 20 minutes. Talk with someone about your favorite part.
    • Extension: Send me a video or a letter (take a picture and email it to me) telling me about the book and explaining your favorite part. Don't forget to tell me why it's your favorite part!
  • Writing - Re-read your book. Do you have a problem and a solution? Can you add to your problem and solution to stretch them out? Write for 20 minutes.
  • Math - Continue to keep your counting skills strong by filling in the missing numbers on this “Counting Grid” practice page.
    • Extension: Make a number scroll. Cut a piece of paper in half the long way. Tape it to a paper towel or toilet paper tube. Start writing numbers going down the paper. When you get to the end of the paper, tape another piece of paper on and keep going. You can roll the papers up around the tube and fasten it with a rubber band when you aren't using it.
    • Number scrolls – Mrs. Mooney's Class Blog
  • Science -Put a rubberband around a door knob.

Frederick by Leo Lionni

In our Zoom morning meeting today I read the book Frederick by Leo Lionni. It's one of my all time favorite books! If you missed it you can borrow it from Sora or watch someone read it on YouTube. I asked you to imagine about what Frederick was thinking about and draw it or write about it. You can print this paper, or just draw or write on another paper! If you'd like to share it with me you can take a picture of it and email it to me!
