We had such a fun morning meeting today over Zoom! I loved the dance party especially! There are more activities that go with the Scholastic News Magazine we read. There are some videos, a slideshow, and a game. I might even do the dance party again later! You can do the activities, or read other Scholastic News Magazines, by visiting their website and typing in our class code: rmanza

Morning Message:

Good morning first graders!
It’s a new month! The month is now April. April is the 4th month.
Think about this: What signs of spring have you noticed outside?
Love,
Mrs. Manz

Calendar:

Today's calendar square:
Square
Trace the square. Cut it out.
Can you fold the square into equal pieces? How many?
Are the pieces exactly equal? If they are then we call them congruent. Congruent means they are exactly the same size and shape.
I can fold this square into 2 equal pieces called halves
I can also fold this square into 4 equal pieces called fourths or quarters. I can fold this square into fourths in a few different ways.
fourths four different ways
Our calendar has a secret question this month:
Secret question Four Halves Equal Two ______

Wednesday's learning activities

  • Reading - Find a new book to read. It could be an actual book or an ebook. Take a sneak peek before you read.
    • Read for 20 minutes.
    • Check your sneak peek.
      • Have you tried Sora yet? Here is some information from Mrs. Wright about using Sora. For most students, your username is your first initial last name (no space and no capitals). If that doesn't work for you, let me know and I can check your username. Sora has books for all ages. I'm even reading a book on Sora!
  • Writing - Re-read your book. Do a careful editing check
      • Make sure each sentence starts with an uppercase letter.
      • Use all lower case letters unless you used the word I or for names
      • Make sure each sentence ends with punctuation
    • Write for 20 minutes.
  • Math - Practice subtraction skills with this “Subtraction Equations” work sheet.
    • Extension: Circle 5 of the equations. Write story problems that match the numbers in the equation. Remember, story problems need to have a question like, "How many were left?" or "How many did she lose?"
  • Science experiment - Place the tip of a spatula blade on a desk or table with the handle extending over the side. Pull the handle down and let go. Discuss what happens when the handle is let go? What does the spatula look like? Do you hear anything? Describe the volume, pitch and frequency of what you observe.
  • Social Studies - Fill in the April calendar.  Each day, notice the weather and fill it in on the weather graph.
