Message

Happy Friday first graders! We will have an afternoon meeting today at 2:00. We will do the "weekend's near" greeting, but it will actually be "vacation's near" since next week is our April break. Think about what your word and movement will be.

Love,
Mrs. Manz

Calendar

Here is today's calendar square.
quadralateral

How many sides and vertices does this shape have? Do you know the name of this shape? Hint: It's not a rhombus because a rhombus has  equal sides. On this shape two sides are shorter and 2 are longer.

Learning activities for Friday

  • Reading
    • Read (or reread) a few of the books on your topic.
      • Stop and think about the key details in each book.
      • WHO or WHAT is this book mostly about.
      • WHAT is happening?
      • WHEN or WHERE is this taking place?
      • WHY is this happening.
      • WHY is this important.
      • HOW does this work.
  • Writing
    • Jot down the answers to some of the questions above about one of your books. You can do this on paper or in a Google Doc.
  • Math - Problem Solving Friday -  Remember to show your work, and use an equation to prove your answer.
    • A cook fed 5 adults and 1 child. How many people did the cook feed?
    • Landon has 6 comic books.  Amelia has 7 comic books. How many comic books do they have in all?
    • If you have 5 apples and your friend takes away 4, how many apples will you be left with?
    • Griffin is reading a book that has a total of 18 pages. If he has read 7 pages, how many pages does he have left to read?
    • Make up a word problem of your own, and ask someone in your family to answer it.
  • Science -  Engineering Process - What is the Question or Problem; Imagine a solution; Plan your design; Create your design; Test it; Improve It
    • Problem: What Happens when DRY PAPER IN A GLASS IS DUNKED INTO WATER?????
    • You will need: Paper, glass, dishpan of water
    • What to do: Wad up a piece of paper and wedge it into the bottom of a drinking glass. Turn the glass upside down and push it into a dishpan of water.
    • More science fun: Use taller or wider glasses. In which type of glass (taller or wider) does water rise more? Push the glass completely below the surface of the water. Does the paper still remain dry?
    • The paper will not get wet! How it works: A small amount of water is forced into the mouth of the glass when the glass is pushed below the surface of the water. However, since the air in the glass cannot escape, it presses back against the water until the pressure of the air equals the pressure of the water. The wad of paper wedged into the bottom of the glass is safely out of the reach of the water, so the paper does not get wet
  • Social Studies
    • Each day, notice the weather and fill it in on the weather graph.

Next week - April break

Next week is April break.

As always, reading every day for 10-20 minutes is the most important thing you can do. You can read books or online materials from our online reading resource list. Here is the April break homework packet that I usually send. It is optional. It has some reading ideas, some fun spring writing paper, and some math games.

If you are looking for more ideas of things to do:

Circle

Trace this figure. Cut it out. Can you fold it into equal parts?

This is an interesting one! It can be folded any way into equal parts!

Learning activities for Thursday

  • Writing
    • Add to the nonfiction text feature example you started yesterday or start a new one.
  • Math - Subtraction Practice Thursday
    • Please write and solve 8 subtraction equations using 8, 10, 12, or 14 as the bigger number, and 5, 6, 7. 8,or 9 as the smaller number.  An example: 12-10=_______
    • Please solve these equations:   19-10 =______; 29-9=______; 22-10 =______
    • Please solve these challenge equations:  90-10=______; 50-20=______; Please make 5 other equations like these and solve them.
  • Science - Engineering Process - What is the Question or Problem; Imagine a solution; Plan your design; Create your design; Test it; Improve It
    • Problem:  What falls faster?
    • You will need: Paper, books, coins
    • What to do: Place a piece of paper on top of a book; make sure that the paper is smaller than the book. Drop both together. What happens?  Now drop a piece of paper by itself. What do you notice?. Do a similar experiment with a smaller piece of paper placed on top of a large coin (instead of on a book). What happens?
    • How it works: The book and coin push aside the air in front of the paper. For this reason, the paper falls at the same (fast) rate as its heavier “helper” (the book or coin). A piece of paper falling by itself cannot as easily overcome air resistance. Consequently, it falls more slowly.
    • More science fun: Drop different sizes of paper on different weights of books and coins. Which combinations of sizes and weights falls fastest?
  • Social Studies
    • Each day, notice the weather and fill it in on the weather graph.

Wow! How exciting! It's the letter S. We now have three letters that we know will be in our mystery word puzzle. Do you have any ideas what the mystery word will be?

mystery word

Learning activities for Wednesday

  • Reading
    • Watch Mrs. Manz’s video on nonfiction text features. Look at this Nonfiction Text Features chart
    • Read (or reread) a few of the books on your topic. Make sure your books are nonfiction. If you have fiction books, put those aside in a “fun to read” pile instead of your “nonfiction book club” pile.
    • For each book, look closely for nonfiction text features. On your book list from Monday make a note about what text features that book has.

  • Writing
    • Choose one of the nonfiction text features. Make your own example of that text feature about your topic.

  • Math - Addition Practice Wednesday
    • Please make and solve 8,  2 number addition equations using numbers between 6 and 14.  Be sure to challenge yourself! example - 6+13=___)
    • Please solve these 3 number addition equations. Tip: remember to look for easy number matches to add first!
      • 4+8+6=______
      • 7+1+9=______
      • 7+4+3=_____
      • Please create 3 more equations to solve yourself. Be sure to challenge yourself!
    • Solve these equations:
      • 3 +10=_______
      • 40+10=_______
      • 23+10=_______
      • Make 3 other addition equations using 10 and another number and solve them.  Challenge yourself.

  • Science-Engineering Process - What is the Question or Problem; Imagine a solution; Plan your design; Create your design; Test it; Improve It
    • Watch Mr. Neil’s introduction to this activity here Which Falls Faster?
    • Materials:  Notebook paper
    • What to do: Crumple a piece of notebook paper into a ball. Drop it at the same time as you drop a flat sheet of notebook paper. Which piece of paper takes longer to fall?
    • How it works: There is more air pressing on the surface of the flat piece of paper than on the surface of the paper ball. The crumpled up ball has less air to push out of the way as it falls than the flat piece of paper does.
    • More science fun: Do the experiment with different sizes and shapes of paper sheets and paper balls. Which sizes and shapes fall fastest? Which falls slowest?

  • Social Studies
    • Each day, notice the weather and fill it in on the weather graph.

Morning message

Tuesday, April 14, 2020                                 4-14-20

I am so excited for our new Reader's Workshop Unit! I loved hearing from so many of you about what your topic for your book club is. Remember, this is a topic you are going to learn all about. Then, you will design a project to teach others about it.

Love,
Mrs. Manz

Calendar

Here is today's calendar square.

Parrallellogram

What shape is this?

It's a trapezoid! It has 4 sides and 4 vertices. One set of sides is parallel. Remember, parallel means that they could go on forever without touching. Which set of sides is parallel?

Learning activities for Tuesday

  • Reading
    • Read a few of the books on your topic. Think about if each book is “just right” for you. You know a book is just right when you can understand and remember it, you can read or figure out most of the words, and it’s interesting to you. Some of your books might be online and can be read to you (like bookflix)
  • Writing
    • Reread your question list about your topic from yesterday.
    • Add a few more questions about your topic.
      • I wonder…
      • I’d like to know...
      • I'm curious about…
    • Maybe you read the answer to some of your questions. Make a note of any answers you found.
  • Math  Counting/Place Value  Tuesday

    • Please gather a group of things that you have enough of to make a “counting collection” of 108.  How will you organize your counting, today please try organizing in groups of 10.
    • Bonus Challenge:  Predict what number you would make if you add 10 more objects to your group of 108.  Add those 10, and see if your prediction is right!
    • Then using your collection please make the following numbers: 39 - 53  - 78 - 91
  • Science Engineering Process - What is the Question or Problem; Imagine a solution; Plan your design; Create your design; Test it; Improve It.
    • Activity:  Make and explore with a paper fan
    • Materials:  paper, tape
    • What to do: Fold a sheet of notebook paper into an accordion shape. Pinch together the folds, 1 to 2 inches from one of the ends. Tape the folded end to make a handle. Grasp the handle and wave your hand back and forth. You will feel a cooling breeze on your face!
    • How it works: Even though you cannot see air, it is just as real as objects that are visible. Air has mass and takes up space, just like visible objects. When the paper fan moves the air, you feel the motion of the air as a breeze on your face.
    • More science fun: Make fans out of larger and smaller paper. Which size gives the strongest breeze? Is there a limit to the size (smallest or largest) of the fan that you can make?
    • fan
  • Social Studies
    • Each day, notice the weather and fill it in on the weather graph.
